Jesuits are persecuted by the Nicaraguan government

September 1, 2023

On August 23rd, the state of Nicaragua cancelled the legal status of the Society of Jesus in that country, confiscating all its property including the buildings and funds of its communities and works. The Nicaraguan regime has carried out more than 3,000 cases of similar cancellation since 2018. The Jesuits have been consistently critical of President Daniel Ortega’s government. According to America magazine, a Jesuit publication, as of 29th August, eleven Jesuits remain in the country. More details of this story are available on the Roman Curia website here, in an interview (in Spanish) with Fr José María Tojeira SJ, speaking from El Salvador. The Jesuits in Britain have been following the story closely and offering media support to highlight the issue.
